Finding our fullest voice
Harmony Heritage Chorus, a proud Southern New England chapter of Harmony, Incorporated, used the “down time” imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic to rethink and reassess the direction in which we want to go in relation to the larger local and artistic community.
Harmony, Inc. is an international organization whose purpose is to empower all women through education, friendship and a cappella singing. It was chartered in Providence, RI in 1959 by five Sweet Adelines International chapters in reaction to what was, at that time, the larger organization’s policy of deliberate racial exclusion. Those chapters founded a new organization to which “all women can belong.”
We, the members of Harmony Heritage, recommit to this founding principle.
Today, in this long overdue national conversation on racial justice and equity, it is not enough for our chapter to just throw open the doors to any woman who likes to sing. We must step beyond those doors – into the many neighborhoods of our culturally rich and artistically gifted little state, and reach out to women of varied backgrounds, races and experiences. We resolve as individuals to work toward understanding our own biases and to help make every woman who answers our invitation feel cared for, valued and supported.
